I do not take walks to clear my head. That phrase suggests a kind of mental housekeeping, and what actually happens on a long walk is nearer to the opposite: things get delivered. A sentence that would not come at the desk arrives somewhere past the second bridge.

There is a lot of evidence that walking helps thinking, and I find it believable, but I trust my own experience more. Rhythm quiets the part of the mind that insists on being busy. The eyes, with something to do, stop interrogating the thoughts. And the world supplies small interruptions, a heron, a man mending a wall, that keep the mind from tightening around a single worry.

My rules are few. Leave the phone in a pocket, set to silent. Pick a direction, not a destination. Walk for at least forty minutes, because the first twenty are mostly spent still arguing. Carry a notebook, and do not take it out until you are sure the idea will not survive the walk home.
